The Urtecho Lab strives to be a welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, or nationality. I only ask that you are motivated, curious, and believe that science should be fun. In return, the lab and myself will invest 100% of our efforts into helping you reach your full potential as a scientist.
Experience in Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, Metabolomics, and/or Synthetic Biology are preferred, but please feel free to propose opportunities to synergize with more distant disciplines. Fully bench, fully computational, and hybrid scientists are all welcome to apply and will receive equal levels of mentorship and training. Applications should be sent directly to Guillaume at gurtecho [at] health [dot] ucsd [dot] edu. First-generation scientists are encouraged to apply.
How to Apply (Undergraduates)
Undergraduates will work with a designated lab mentor, typically on smaller projects that will be a part of a larger research initiative. No prior experience is needed. The ideal time to apply is during the winter or spring quarters to start in the Summer quarter. Students working during the summer will receive financial support (19.5 hrs/week). During the regular quarters (10-15 hrs/week), students will receive credits. Applicants should send Guillaume a CV/resume highlighting any relevant coursework or extracurricular activities and a brief statement of interest. Enthusiasm for research and a willingness to learn are the primary criteria. Appointments are typically until project completion or graduation, but will include externship opportunities to experience different laboratory environments.
How to Apply (Research Technicians) [No Anticipated Openings]
While some laboratory upkeep will be required, Technicians will be expected to lead or play major roles in the research projects within the lab. Responsibilities include experimental design, data collection, and analysis, as well as maintaining lab equipment and supplies. To apply, please send a CV and a brief reason for your interest in the lab to Guillaume. Previous experience in a biology or biochemistry-related lab is required. Successful candidates will have strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently. Appointments can be made for 12 to 24 months.
How to Apply (PhD Students) [No Anticipated Openings]
Graduate Students will receive personalized mentorship and engage in cutting-edge microbiome research using advanced molecular biology and computational approaches. To apply for a rotation, please send a CV and a brief reason for your interest in the lab to Guillaume. The Urtecho Lab is currently able to recruit students from the UCSD Biomedical Sciences PhD program, but please reach out if you are in a related program and we can try to make it work. Currently, I am not able to directly admit students. Graduation is expected within 4-6 years from program start.
How to Apply (Postdoctoral Researchers & Senior Research Associates)
UCSD offers outstanding postdoctoral training with built-in tracks for career advancement within the university. To apply, please send a Cover Letter and CV with publications to Guillaume. If you do not have a manuscript/preprint available online, you are welcome to include a .pdf of a manuscript in preparation, which will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
